Updates for September 25, 2017

Happy first day of Autumn 2017!  We are 6 weeks into school now, and the kiddos are finally settling into our routines.  We have had a couple of new friends join our class recently (WELCOME Shayden and Diego!) and everyone has been not only welcoming, but a big help in teaching our new friends our schedules, routines, and expectations.   I have been very proud of our students. We have a lot happening in the next month of school, so without further ado, here's the scoop....

Math:  We have finished up our unit on true and false number sentences.  These were big concepts that our children worked hard at understanding.  Next up is doubles and doubles plus one, another huge concept!

Language Arts:  We will be reading the story "All That Corn" from our Hartcourt series this week, learning how corn moves from farm to table.  Later in the week we will begin our Ancient Egypt unit of study by doing a read aloud from the Magic Tree House book "Mummies in the Morning." If your child would like to bring in their own copy of the book so they can follow along, that would great.  Please make sure they write their name in their book if they do.  I really look forward to this unit and incorporating it into other subjects.

Science:  Monday we will have a very special visit from our Native American counselor, Deb Onsae.  She will be joining us during our science time to teach us all about the importance of corn in the Native American culture.  Students will be participating in activities like schucking and grinding corn, as well as tasting blue corn pancakes and corn fritters.  I would love for our kids to have a chance to try other corn products (popcorn, corn chips, corn tortillas, etc...)  If you care to please bring in a corn snack for our students to try on Monday.  Ms. Onsae has said she would love if we could get 2 parent helpers from 2:15-3:15.  Let me know if you can help.  After this we will begin the mummification process ...on an apple.

Social Studies:  From ancient Mesopotamia to Ancient Egypt!  Our students our on the move.  Our kids will be making pocket books with Ms. Reger, and start learning about the people of the Nile, and the importance of the Nile.  Our class absolutely loves the time the spend learning from Ms. Reger!

Coming Up In October....

Two things to look for in the blue folders next week.

  1. Mustang Gallop packets.  The Gallop is our number one fundraiser, put on through Flagstaff's best PTO.  All money raised goes directly to Marshall school!  Please have your child spend the next few weeks collecting pledges per lap or flat donations.  On October 6th the kiddos will run their laps and then spend the next few days collecting their money.  There are prizes for every student who participates, a prize for the student who collects the most money, and a prize for the class that collects the most money.  It would be amazing if our class collected the most money for our school!   Let's get out there and collect those pledges.
  2. Parent/Teacher Conference Sign Up.  Conferences will be Monday, October 9th and Tuesday, October 10th.  I will not be having conferences on Wednesday!  Please pick 2 or 3 times on the sheet going home on Monday, and return by Thursday, September 28th.  I will compile a final schedule and send it home on Friday.
Box Tops:  Our box top collection should be coming up soon.  Please remember to cut and all of those little box tops and send them in!  Every year they add up to a couple of thousand dollars for our school, making every box top count!

Save the Dates:

Wednesday, October 4th - Walk to School Day.  Join us at the Armory to walk in groups.  If your child rides the bus, they will have a permission slip that will need to be signed and given to the BUS DRIVER (not me) to participate.  The bus will drop off anyone with a signed permission slip at the Armory to walk to school with us!

October 12th-13th - School Closed for the fall holiday.  Go jump in some leaves, drink some pumpkin spice something, and read some great fall books by a fire together!

Happy Fall Ya'll!
-Ms. Shaw
